- Are you OVERWHELMED OR STRESSED?
- Overwhelm is when you are OVER-STIMULATED. You are taking on more than your brain is conditioned to process.
- Today we read the equivalent of 7 newspapers. Our information intake has increased, but our brains have not evolved to handle it. We take in SO MUCH INFORMATION – we don’t know where to begin. We are short-circuiting & shutting down — we cannot multi-task. Those who do more than one thing at once, are simply switching between tasks quickly.
- What is STRESS? Stress can often be born out of overwhelm. “OMG I HAVE SO MUCH TO DO MY BRAIN HURTS”… We apply the meaning, “If I don’t figure it out, become successful, I’m a failure.”
- Being in Math class, doing long division, my brain felt like it was on fire. I HATED math in elementary school. I thought I was “bad at math.” That was the meaning I applied to the feeling of overwhelm and then stress, fear, and frustration. What I didn’t realize as a young kid, that I later embraced was it was growth. It is OKAY TO FEEL CONFUSED.
- My mom never wanted me to be stressed or in pain so she fixed things for me early on. I had developed a bad habit of having her fix my messes when I became too overwhelmed. As a child the MESSAGING I got from that was -“I am not capable of handling this.”
- REFRAME STRESS, FEAR & OVERWHELM + GETTING PRESENT IN THE MOMENT
- Understand overwhelm in many ways RESISTANCE TO GROWTH. Our brains can only process and quantify what we are going to LOSE right now if we step forward.
