I have titled this episode today “How to Rank Advance and Explode Your Team Growth in 21 Days.”  This really should have been titled, “How To Become A Better Upline.”

I know it hurts a little bit, but that’s the truth. How can you become a better up line?  Because, here’s the thing. So often in the network marketing space, we’ve got these goals to hit. You have a company that’s telling you:
this is what you need to accomplish every month in order to be deemed successful. There’s a lot of chasing recognition, and not as much true leading.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that there are not great leaders in network marketing. There are! And you are one of them. But we’ve just got to help ourselves to step into it in a more empowered, authentic way.

First things first: stop chasing people and instead start leading. The moment that you instead focus on, “How can I show up with more value in the online space?  How can I pour into people?” I promise you, the entire dynamic of your business is going to shift. If you take a look at the internal needs of every human being, you’ve got: certainty, uncertainty, significance, contribution, growth, and love / connection. Those are the six. Every single one of us needs that on some level, but especially in network marketing.  There are very specific timelines, and you are seeing your other teammates achieve certain goals, ranks, and monthly prizes.

MANY of these women shift away from what they initially got into coaching for, which was love and connection and creating certainty in their lives as an income.  Instead, they end up chasing significance and this recognition.  All of a sudden, they feel totally out of alignment with what they really want in the long haul. Most of us as human beings want to experience personal growth. That’s what’s attractive about network marketing, because you get this community of people to help every single day. It’s beautiful, and it can be a really beautiful model. However, most women (and some men) end up in this very masculine energy as they continue to grow.  Instead of leading each day with the approach of loving connection, they’re so fixated on hitting a certain goal that they end up stuck in chasing significance. And, if your number one focus is significance, you’re going to start burning out.

Do you know what I’m talking about?  I hear this probably three times a day.  We have a Facebook group health coaches, almost 6000 people. Anytime we ask our network marketers,
“What are you struggling with?”, the response is,
“I’m burnt out from posting on social media, and burned out from inviting, and how the heck do I find business builders?”
All of this really starts with
you.
You’ve got to do the internal work.

I also want you to take a look at your social media. So you’re trying to attract business builders. You want to find these unicorn entrepreneur moms, or whoever really wants to build a business. Where are these people hiding?  They exist.  You’ve got to draw them out. The way to do that is through your content. How are you showing up online? If you go right now on your social media platforms, I want you to do an audit. Take a look at your social media platforms and really critically ask, “What is someone coming here going to learn about me?”

If I look at your page right now, what do you do?  How can I work with you?  Are you somebody that I want to mentor me in a business?  Are you showing up like a business owner?  Now, I understand that in many companies (especially, i.e. health and fitness companies) that encourage enrollment with products – supplements, workout programs, etc. Because, if they’ve got all of the products, they’re going to sell them and take their customers through this funnel of joining some kind of online challenge using the products.  And, within 21 days, that customer will become an entrepreneur and business builder…right?

Do we see where the disconnect is coming from?
You are probably marketing on your social media platforms to people who are looking for some kind of health and fitness help. And within 21 days, you have this expectation that your clients are going to be ready to build a business themselves. But entrepreneurship is not for everyone.
So my first big, big tip.
(Side note: I want you to write this down.  Really think about this, meditate on this for the week.)
If all of your social media content is exclusively recipes and workouts?  Sure, you may attract some business minded fitness people.  Maybe a personal trainer, a bikini fitness competitor, or a nutritionist who wants to have a secondary stream of income through Network Marketing.
However…
I highly recommend that you also start putting out some kind of business content. Now, that might not be everyone’s thing, but a lot of you are spending hours a day reading personal development and business development and you’re only giving that to your team.
But, you’re not talking about that publicly.  Publicly, you’re only focused on health / fitness, and then inside your team is all business. We’ve got to figure out a way for you to start blending some of that business content into your social media marketing. For me personally, if I was in network marketing today, my content would probably have nothing (maybe very little) to do with health and fitness.  I’m a business owner, and I’m going to teach you how to build a health and fitness business online. So the health and fitness would just kind of be the flavoring of the business. But my focus, what I would lead with, would be business.  I know that there are people in network marketing companies who are leading this way. And – no surprise – they’re having a lot of success with the people that they’re attracting in. Take a look at your social media platforms right now and ask yourself this if you were following you.
The biggest challenge that you’re going to run into when you bring on a new network marketer is their mindset. They’re insecure. They’re not sure if they’re going to be ready for their own business, and you end up doing a lot of life coaching in those early stages.  Some of those people do end up drifting off, because they just don’t feel ready. But, if you start priming your potential coaches and distributors on live video with personal development-style content, you’re going to be planting those seeds for them and helping them with their mindset before they even sign up with you. So, you’ve already supported them and done all of this work prior to them enrolling.
So that’s number one: start thinking about, “how can I start integrating more business or personal development content into my social media posts, so that I’m really training people?”

Now, goal setting.  When I ask, “OK, what you want to achieve?”  and everyone says, “I want to make six figures this year!  I want to hit, like, green-orange-yellow-purple-diamonds-silver-gold!”  Basically, whatever the top rankings are as a distributor or coach.  Every company has their different ranking levels, which is what everyone seems to want. Instead, focus on what
you want. —
Make a list of all the things that a superstar person would do. The superstar person in your industry: what are their qualities?  What does that person look like?  You’ve got to step into being her. Then, make a list of all the things that you’ve been doing right now in your business. And I want you to compare. Are you being that person right now in your business? If you’re saying, “Oh I want a team of rock star coaches or rock star distributors who sell like crazy; who make me tons of money and never complain and have no issues.”
I’m not saying don’t try to manifest that, but also take the action to realize that
you are the person that’s going to attract those people.
If you’re saying that you want somebody who’s consistent, who shows up every day, who loves live video, who provides amazing content, who’s highly creative, who invests in themselves, who goes to all of these events outside of my company, and just continues to learn and grow and thrive.
Are
you doing those things?
If you’re not putting that out there and if you’re not showing up in that way, you’re not going to attract those people into your business. Plain and simple.
So, instead of focusing on all about what you want, think about how you can start providing more value to attract those people into your business.

I know this is some tough love, but this is what I think a lot of people are missing in in their goal setting.  We have to talk about when you’re stepping into your power as a leader. Are you staying inside the box that your company is giving you?  Or, are you being that frickin’ badass, cool-as-shit person that everybody in the company is following because you’re a frickin’ innovator?

Are you striving to fit into the business model that’s already been created; posting the content that they’re telling you to post, doing the things they are telling you to do?  Or, are you saying, “That’s cool, but how can I expand on that?  How can I change it?” Don’t come into business and say, “How can I fit in?”  You’ve got to come into this business world and say, “I’m going to frickin’ change the game.  I’m going to create new rules.  I’m gonna up level my game so high, that everyone else has to up level too.”

Now, I know in a lot of network marketing companies, a lot of people want to hide behind posts because they don’t want to get on live video. “What do I talk about?  What do I say?  You’ve got to get on live video, man.  You’ve got to show people who you are. How are you showing up right now?  There’s a lot of things about duplication within network marketing companies. Like, here are the steps and as your upline I’ll walk you through. You’re going to duplicate exactly what I do. Here’s the problem. So many people take the concept of duplication, and instead of using that as the framework, they instead become cookie cutter or copycat. They create the same content. They copy and paste their upline’s statuses. That’s not what is meant by duplication.
Duplication means that success leaves clues. So, take that conceptually and then think critically and strategically about how you can create your own personal brand and stand out uniquely in the online space.  That is truly the secret to creating not just a successful network marketing business for yourself, but building leaders underneath you.  That’s not an easy thing to teach people.  You might not have the people in your team right now who are mentally and emotionally ready or have a big enough “why” for why they want to create this business. It just might not be for them. But, I’m telling you: if you start implementing some of these things we’re talking about, you will start attracting those people who are hungry for it.

Here’s the funny thing: when I was in network marketing, I did it for several years on and off. I did not want to sign up a single person under me until I had figured it out. And, this was before the days of podcasts and YouTube trainings on how to build a network marketing team. Now, everything is done for you and just laid out. When I first was part of it, it was still new. I was still piecing it all together, and I didn’t have an upline team that I was connected to. I just signed up on my own and I got connected to somebody in Hawaii who wasn’t very active in building the business.  I was in New York, on my own in Long Island trying to figure this thing out, and I wasn’t super successful at first. But, one day I decided that I was going to go all in.
I started studying every single thing that I could get my hands on.  But, I had so much integrity about not wanting to sign people on before I had a system, I literally refused to sign people on for about eight months. Stupidest idea, because, “Hello, that’s how you make money! You need to build a team to make money!” But I just wanted to make sure I had it all figured out.  So I spent eight months immersing myself in every single thing that I could find. And I was obsessed with it. And, by the end of those eight months, I had this gorgeous back-end system built out on Dropbox with Step-By-Step tabs, files, folders, charts and literally everything that anyone would need to get started in their first year.  It was insane.

I decided that I was going to step into the position of a leader. Nobody gave me permission to lead.
Nobody said, “Hey Jen!  You look ready to lead. You look like you’re ready to step up!”  No.  I knew that I needed to learn my shit and grow into the person that was worthy of leading amazing people.  So I prepared myself.  I prepared better than anybody else in my extended team, and they were all blown away by how quickly I had grown within my company.  And I would get questions like, “Oh my gosh, how do you do that?  How do you have time to do all these videos?  How do you have time to make systems?”
And I said, “How do you not have time to do that?”
I know, I was not necessarily in the position that a lot of these other women were in with having kids or families. But, I was fanatical about it because I was so hungry for it. And you’ve got to be hungry in entrepreneurship. I was ignorance on fire. I really was, and I knew that I was. So I created systems, I invested in myself and in business coaches, in courses and events that were outside of what my company provided because I knew that I wasn’t getting everything that I needed to build at the level that I wanted to go to. So, you’ve got to ask yourself that same thing. What are you pouring into your brain every single day?
How can you constantly push the boundaries of network marketing?  How are you becoming a better business owner?  How are you becoming a better leader?  What are you doing?

And I’m not just talking about reading another book. Yes, you need to be doing some kind of development every single day, but far too many people are just addicted to reading and they’re not taking any friggin’ action. Well, having a theoretical understanding of something but zero implementation?  It’s not worth anything.  You’re just a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and you’re not making any money from it. If no one knows how much you know, it’s kind of useless. So instead of just doing more personal development, take more action. Stop sitting and saying, “I’m stuck.”  Every time you say that, you’re creating that negative pattern and you’re creating a self-fulfilling prophecy that you’re going to be stuck. And guess what?  You’re not going to rank advance.  You’re not going to attract positive, go-getter people if you’re constantly beating yourself up and beating that into your head. Even in the people that I work with, it drives me kind of bonkers when we sit down and I say, “OK what’s your question? What are you working on right now?”
And they say, “Well I’m really stuck. Really stuck.”
If you are approaching your business with that energy, your whole body just depresses.  Your physiology shifts, and the words that you’re saying are being spoken into existence.
Listen: we all have bad days.  We all have rough times.  We will hit patches. I’m not saying you can’t have that experience, but you sit in it for 90 seconds and then you get your butt out of it.

If you’re genuinely stuck, as I have been many times where I’m like, “I have done everything that I can possibly do on my own. I’ve watched all the YouTube videos, I’ve done the podcasts, I’ve read the books. What do I need to do now?”

Every time you have a problem, instead of whining or sitting in that problem, be an entrepreneur.  Be a problem solver; you’re problem-solving for your clients every single day. Problem solve for yourself. If you have a problem, there’s a solution. There’s a coach out there who is already creating some incredible content that has a solution that you’re looking for.
You just have to be ready to get out of that sucker feeling; get out of excuse mode.
Stop blaming your upline.
Stop waiting for somebody to give you the answers.
Stop waiting for somebody to give you the permission to lead.
Just stop waiting around!
You’re just sitting in it. Get up. Decide what you need to do. Create a concrete goal and then find a solution. I’m not saying a solution is necessarily going to come easily, but challenge yourself a little bit.
If you do not want to build conditioning, endurance, stamina…then entrepreneurship isn’t for you. That’s the real deal. No sugarcoating.
I took time off.  I took time where I had to step back from it because I wasn’t emotionally ready. But you better believe I got my butt in therapy. I read books at nauseam, got myself physically in so many uncomfortable places so that I could grow because I understood that that was what was required of me. If you’re trying to build a team of bad ass leaders, consistently get yourself uncomfortable – with live video, with creating something new, with getting visible.
You’re modeling for your team. Start showing up in the way that you want your team to perform. It’s all starts with you.

Now moving forward. One of the biggest things that I really want to touch on: we need to really talk about your strategy to actually rank advance.  What is your strategy?
You need to know your goal within the confines of the rules and the system of your company; what is required of you in the period of a year, or whatever it is in order for you to achieve that goal. I cannot tell you how many network marketers I’ve worked with.. 95 percent of them tell me they want to make $5000 a week or hit this rank. And when I say, “OK great!  What is the strategy that is required in order for you to achieve that goal?  How many people do you need to sign on?  What does your volume need to be?  How many customers do you need?  What do your sales have to be?” And they respond vaguely.  “I don’t know. I think I just need to, like, sign people on.”
Guys.  There’s no excuse for that. I don’t care that you have a network marketing business versus a brick and mortar business. Obviously the stakes are lower for you if you have a network marketing business.  Let’s say you own a gym and you don’t know how many people you need to get in a class, at what price you need to get them in, and how much you’re supposed to pay for instructors, and what it costs to keep the electricity on. If you don’t know your numbers, you’re going to go bankrupt. You’ve got to know your numbers. That is like a fundamental piece of owning a business.
And many of you in network marketing never went to school for business. That’s fine!
I didn’t go to school for business!
I went to school for psychology, and I had a hunger for business.
(I should have gone to school for business and industrial psychology..)
But I love what I do, and I’ve been able to say, “OK, I’m going to learn. Not just from school, but from people who have successfully done it.”  So I’ve studied the people who have successfully built online businesses. If you know somebody who’s at a certain level in your company and you’re like, “Well Jen, I don’t know what numbers I need…”, you got to go ask that person. You’ve got to go do that research. I’m sure there’s a YouTube video or video in your in your web page for your company that’s going to explain it to you.  Here’s the thing: in most companies, achieving rank does not necessarily mean income.  And it breaks my heart when I have clients and people who are connected to me in the online world who say, “I need money. I have to grow my finances, so I’m going to try to shoot for this rank.” And I have to tell you: I’ve had a lot of women who have done that prior to working with me who are very confused and still struggling when they do hit that rank and the income doesn’t it doesn’t disappear.
It doesn’t because that’s not the way it was built.
You’ve really got to go and look at what that means, so that you can set a concrete goal. You can’t just be throwing shit at the wall, like “I just need a couple more people.”
You’ve got to know your numbers.

A quick recap on how to rank advance and explode your team growth:

You’ve got to become a better up line.  You’ve got to become a better leader. Stop chasing people and start leading.  Really start focusing on what you want, stop chasing significance, and really understand that it’s all about providing that love and value to your audience. Maybe it’s more business content to attract those entrepreneur minded people, but you’ve really got to ask yourself how you are showing up in your business right now.
And why would someone want to work with you?  Would you work with you?
Really ask yourself if you are prepared to lead a team. Do you have integrity in that?  Are you that person that’s got systems in place?  You know exactly what you’re going to send people when they sign up. You know exactly how to conduct your very first call with them to get them amped up and on fire. Do you have all of those things?  If not, that’s ok. When you first come into your business, you’re not necessarily going to have all those things in place. But it’s time to start getting those things in place. One thing at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Invite your team into this training and have them watch it, so that you can hold each other accountable and work together.
